Bad Breath or Halitosis is a common problem resulting from poor oral hygiene and could be a sign of other health problems. In most cases it is caused by bacterial growth in the mouth caused by infrequent or improper brushing and flossing. Infections of the mouth or respiratory tract infections like throat infections etc could also cause bad breath. Smoking or chewing tobacco, consuming foods with strong odor such as garlic and onions may also cause bad breath. Poorly fitted dentures, yeast infections of the mouth, salivary gland problems and many other diseases or illness may contribute towards bad breath. Treatment strategies include maintaining proper oral hygiene, eating healthy, chewing gum (to encourage saliva production), using mouthwashes etc. depending on the cause. It can also be prevented by drinking plenty of water which encourages saliva production.
